It is extensively employed in various polyurethane rigid foams, including polyisocyanurate board foams. Pentamethyldiethylenetriamine is a colorless to light yellow transparent liquid, readily soluble in water, with a typical purity of 98.0%. Its characteristic properties include viscosity of 2 mPa.s at 25°C, a relative density of 0.8302-0.8306 at 20°C, a flash point (closed cup) around 72°C, a flash point (PMCC) of 83.3°C, a boiling range of 196-201°C or 70-80°C (1100 Pa), a vapor pressure of 0.29*133 Pa at 21°C, and a freezing point below -20°C. The explosive limits are 1.1% (lower) and 5.6% (upper). The refractive index is 1.4435±0.0005, and the pH is 11.0.

Pentamethyldiethylenetriamine is a highly active catalyst for polyurethane reactions, mainly facilitating foam reactions and also utilized in balancing overall foaming and gel reactions. It finds widespread use in various polyurethane rigid foams, including polyisocyanurate board foams. Due to its strong foaming effect, which improves foam flowability, it enhances production processes and increases yields. It is often used in conjunction with DMCHA. Pentamethyldiethylenetriamine can be used alone as a catalyst for polyurethane foam formulations or in combination with other catalysts. When used as a sole catalyst for rigid foam, the recommended dosage is typically in the range of 1.0-2.0 parts per 100 parts of polyol.

In addition to its application in rigid foam formulations, Pentamethyldiethylenetriamine can also be used in the production of polyether-type polyurethane flexible block foams and molded foams. For example, 70% Pentamethyldiethylenetriamine is primarily used in the formulation of flexible foams. This highly active catalyst exhibits fast foaming rates, resulting in foam products with high resilience and load-bearing capacity. In flexible foams, an effective dosage is typically in the range of 0.1-0.5 parts per 100 parts of polyether.

Pentamethyldiethylenetriamine quaternary ammonium salt serves as a delayed catalyst for flexible foams, extending the creamy time, and is suitable for complex-shaped foam products and box foaming processes. It improves cell structure and enhances molding quality. The dosage range is quite wide, and changes in dosage have an insignificant impact on creamy time. However, increasing the dosage can shorten the foam rise time and curing time.

Applications

Polyurethane catalyst PC-5 is widely used in various polyurethane hard bubbles, including polyanocyan uric acid rigid bubbles. Because of its strong foaming effect, it can improve the fluidity of the foam, and it is often shared with DMCHA and so on.
